Dogs and Cats and Horchata, Oh My!

(( Friday, June 6, 2003 // 05: 21 PM ))

Vic and I have been having fun together. On Wednesday, he was in a fabulous mood all day, and napped for two hours in the afternoon, waking up when Beth came home! It was awesome!

Yesterday, he was doing great other than a bit of crankiness during what should have been his naptime! He also climbed in and out of his toybox, and the toybox tipped over as he was getting out, sending him flat on his face before I could catch him. I felt awful and inspected him as I held a cold, wet, paper towel to his mouth. He cut the inside of his lip on his tooth and bled a little bit. It stopped quickly though, and he calmed down pretty fast. He felt better before I did, I think.

In fact, last night, I had yet another dream about Victor, and I woke up as I gasped, startled, with my arms straight out in front of me with the intention of catching Victor. I was surprised to see I was in my own bed and it was the middle of the night. I sighed, laid back down and said, "I've got to stop dreaming about that kid!" Most dreams as of late have been of him sprinting from me with Olympic athletic abilities. But there was also one where Joe's and my home turned into a boat, sank to the bottom of the ocean, and while we attempted to rescue ourselves, I had my mom take care of Victor for me and worried the whole time about how he was doing and getting back to him.

Weird, weird, weird. I am a freak.

Oh, but in that sinking-home dream, when our house hit the ocean floor, there was a thunder-esque boom, and out the window it was dark but with a little bit of light coming from our house to light up the floating particles of sand. It looked like something out of a Discovery Channel submarine special. It was spooky-cool.

But I digress...

Today, I've been watching Victor closely around things he can climb into. He even stepped inside his toy schoolbus today, and curled his leg the way he does when he intends on sitting inside something. I think he was trying to sit in that little bus! Crazy!

Also today, we visited the animal shelter. I now have Vic's carseat in my car and can take him places! We went to the animal shelter first and looked at the dogs and cats. Vic watched the dogs and even said, "Oooh," once. He smiled from ear to ear when we looked at the cats! Then we went to lunch across the street at the Mexican restaurant I've always liked. I haven't had their cheese enchiladas in quite a while, and I must say, it was just as delicious as I'd remembered! Vic enjoyed their rice, beans, and tortillas. I even gave him a small taste of my horchata, which he enjoyed. As did I! Mmm, horchata.... And I shared my ice and water with him, as well.

After we finished eating, we stopped at the shelter once more, and I'm glad we did, because I saw two people I used to work with, as well as a familiar volunteer! The volunteer said about Vic, "Woah, he's not yours, is he?" When I said no, she laughed and said, "I was gonna say... When did THAT happen?!" I laughed, too.

At a separate time, the dog trainer said about Vic, "I didn't know you had one of those," and I replied, "I don't!" Heh...

The girl I used to work with, Renni, knew right away Vic wasn't mine (at least someone did!), but said he certainly looked like he could be. She totally loved his red hair and said over and over how cute he is. He really is. She wanted to show him the kittens, so we went to the intake room and she pulled out one of the cutest ones for him to see. He pet Maya the kitten extremely gently and touched her with one finger and giggled. He laughed when he saw a cage with a bunch of sibling kittens in a pile of sleepiness. He laughed even more when Renni tickled his toes and fingers with Maya's tail.

As we left, I said I missed Renni's dogs and she gave me her phone number and said I should visit sometime! How cool! I might just take her up on that sometime when we're both not working. There are now four dogs living in her house including a foster dog. Awesome!

Vic and I headed back home. He promptly fell asleep in the carseat. It was hot out, so I didn't want to let him sleep in the car once we were home. I wasn't sure how he'd respond to me picking him up, but decided to go for it, nonetheless. He fussed for a second, so I unbuckled him really fast. I picked him up and gently pushed his head down so it rested between my neck and shoulder. And then I carried him all the way upstairs, and laid him down on the bed for the rest of his nap! Success!

So in all, I'd say today has been a really fun day!
