American Splendor
(( Sunday, February 15, 2004 // 03: 21 AM ))
I just finished watching American Splendor with Joe. Now I want to read some of Harvey Pekar's comics. I'm curious about them. Anyway, I really liked the movie. It's a story of this guy's life, and there were a lot of cool lines and moments in the film. Harvey the character (based on Harvey the real guy) said, "Ordinary life is complex." I think that stood out for me because I think that's really true. Peoples' regular lives are interesting because life is so strange and fascinating, even when nothing remarkable happens. He also said to someone else, "It's good to tell the story of your life." And that made me feel good. I mean, there are times I wonder why the hell I write online at all. But I do enjoy it. That in itself should count for something. But secondly, I enjoy hearing and reading other peoples' stories about their lives. Everyone's got a story to tell. Some stories are more compelling than others, of course. And the ones that appeal to me I love to follow. I just hope someone besides me finds my stories interesting, too. Because I plan to continue telling them for a while.
Besides peoples' life stories, I also find comics fascinating. I love the way art can tell a story. It's such a different form of story telling than novels or movies or anything. So a movie about comics is definitely compelling to me and makes me want to write one of my own. Over the past few years, I've actually wanted to try writing a comic, from time to time. I tend to do that with anything I find interesting. Reading a great book makes me want to write a novel. Reading good comics makes me want to write one, too. Seeing great skiiers even made me want to be a great skiier, but then I found out I hate skiing. Oh, well. It was worth a try! And maybe trying to come up with a comic of some sort could be worth a try, too. I guess there's only one way to find out!

Wow, awesome!
