Relearning To Type

(( Tuesday, April 13, 2004 // 05: 35 PM ))

I just finished reading the Healthy Keyboard Use manual that came with my new ergonomic keyboard. And hot damn, have I been doing a lot of things wrong! Did you know that you're supposed to move your hands and arms around the keyboard instead of stretching your fingers? And that your wrists should be straight at all times? And that you're not actually supposed to rest your wrists on the palm rest thingy while you're typing?? What? Then why didn't you tell ME?

So now I'm sitting here, typing slower than I've typed in years in an effort to learn good typing habits. Why now, you ask? Well, it would seem as though my annoying wrist pain and tingling is due to these bad computer habits of mine. I mean, lots of shit has been happening in my life, people, and I've been wanting to write about it for a while, but the main thing that's helped my wrist pain go away is avoiding my keyboard like the plague. It's a sad day when typing journal entries becomes a health hazard. Seriously, a big motivator to do the right thing by changing my habits in order to help my wrist is the horrifying thought of my doctor telling me I have some sort of Repetitive Motion Disorder from recreational computer use! I do not work with computers, y'all. I play on them. And playing should be fun, damn it! So I'm doing what I can to help myself out. Possibly the worst part about this is I've always felt a certain kind of pride about teaching myself to type super fast back in the early days of chatting online. Now it seems as though I taught myself bad habits that have finally caught up to me. And all I can say about that is goddamnit!

Anyway, enough of that.

Today started out so completely bizarre. I awoke to a phone call from Joe informing me that our apartment complex was threatening to tow my car. Holy crap! I had forgotten that I parked it in Prospective Resident parking when some douchebag had parked in MY reserved space the other night. Towing them would have been a major pain in the ass on my part, so I chose an open spot and promptly forgot about it. For two days. Ha! Anyway, I moved the car right after I hung up with Joe, and there were no problems.

When I got upstairs, I was so hungry, I knew there'd be no going back to sleep. The thought of PB&J was nauseating. I reheated leftover pizza, took one bite and barely choked it down. Same thing with the tuna. This was not going well. I closed my eyes and envisioned foods to see which ones would not make me horrifically queasy, and I realized that the only thing I'd get away with eating was fruit and yogurt. I walked on over to 7-11 and bought exactly that, and all was well with my world. Mmmm, fruit and yogurt. That happens to my body periodically, where I'm frickin' starving and NOTHING sounds any more appetizing than pond water. Usually some form of fruit passes the test and I can eat. Sometimes being the owner of my stomach is confusing at best. I love it, anyway. I think I'll keep it.

I eventually did go back to sleep. It's Spring Break, after all! Heh. Well, sort of. It's Spring Break for the middle school where my fitness classes are held. So, no classes. And now I've turned into a crazy vampire, staying up all night, sleeping all day. A vampire who plays PC games. It's probably not such a good thing, but hey. I'll get things done eventually.

Then I checked in with Kirsten's LiveJournal, and promptly freaked out right alongside her about the arrival of a letter for someone in her family sitting in the post office. Is it from Moorpark??? I shoved my sandals on my feet and in a flurry of motion was at my mailbox in seconds. Hundreds of seconds, but seconds nonetheless! Alas, no letter from Moorpark's EATM program. But that's okay. They probably really did mean "the end of April" when they told us "the end of April." Thank god it's already almost the fifteenth! After the fifteenth, everything else is the end of April, right? Right?? Oy. The suspense!

You know what I DID get in the mail, though?? I got my first birthday card from my sweet friend, Irene! Aww, Reenie is so kind to think of me! Yay!! It's even got kitties on the front. So cool! Thanks, Irene!! Wow, my birthday will be here in two weeks and one day. I ought to hurry up and make some plans already!

Also cool today is that I got an email from Sundry's notify list informing me that I could listen and vote for Discothekid's band, Public Domain. I listened to their song, Second Hand Smoke, and it's freaking awesome! I voted! I hope he gets into the national radio show. He was definitely the best of that group! I really love it when people make cool music. It's just an awesome process, and it's good to know someone will always be making more tunes.

Okay so writing today is a start. I have a whole list of other stuff I want to write about, but we'll see how quickly I'm able to pop out those entries. This wrist stuff and re-learning to type is kind of a bitch. Here is a preview of what you'll see here sometime in the near future! ...

Superheroes, sea monkeys, hermit crabs, hamsters, dreams and nightmares, birthdays, goth clubs, dancing, Loki, horrifyingly bad reality t.v., eyebrow piercings, and airbags.

Stay tuned!
