I is for Insulin Kitty

It seems as though I've used up all my "sick days" with Alphabytes. Four days missed! If I don't miss any more days for the rest of the month, I will be able to complete all the letters of the alphabet. Rock! Woo! Okay. Let's all calm down.
Anyway, this morning I met a new petsitting client! I am referring to the cat himself, of course. His name is Shadow. And he is a total cutie pie. His owner is very cool, too.
Shadow is all black with pretty green eyes. At least, they looked kind of green today. I'll check when I see him again tomorrow. Shadow has diabetes and needs an insulin shot twice a day. Since I've never given shots to animals before, I learned how this morning! I was a little nervous at first. I've dealt with syringes before lots of times, but never ones with needles! I've given oral medication to cats, opossums and birds, and we feed the baby birds with syringes in the wildlife center. Because of that, getting the medicine in the syringe and tapping out the air bubbles? Not a problem. Sticking the cat with a needle? A little freaky! I actually practiced on the poor cat beforehand. His owner had me stick the syringe needle in his neck before I put the medicine in, just to see how easy it is, for him and for me. He was drinking the water from a can of tuna fish, so was not paying much attention to me. It was really easy when I practiced, so I decided to do it for real. I put the medicine in, scruffed some skin gently on the back of his neck, inserted the needle, pushed the medicine in, and that was it. Success! It was really simple and easy, and now I feel very excited to have accomplished a new animal related task. Beginning veterinary medicine classes, here I come!

It would scare me to give a shot to my own animal, I think. A ferret might not be bad, depending on the ferret. Whenever I used to scruff Martin to trim his claws, he'd go completely limp. Does your girl do that? If so, giving her a shot might not be bad. It's definitely nerve wracking at first! I was still nervous to give the shot to Shadow today!! But it was fine, of course.
Ooh, Insulin Kitty *would* be a great name for a rock band. I play flute. How about you? Let's get this thing going!

Is it just me, or would Insulin Kitty be a great name for a rock band?!?
Congratulations! I have to take one of my ferrets in to the vet tech for occasional hormone replacement therapy shots (or she gets hot flashes and cries at Hallmark ads... no wait, that's me 20 years from now). The vet said if I wanted, I could do it at home myself. It costs the same either way, so I take her in to the vet. Maybe someday I'll be brave like you.
