My Eyes, My Body (& Midterms!)

(( Sunday, November 7, 2004 // 09: 13 AM ))

I got a B+ on my Statistics midterm!!! I'm so thrilled! A few people have even asked to study with me, which I think is really awesome. Now I just have to keep this up for five more weeks and get a B in the class, and I'll be good to go.

Yesterday, I had a midterm in Psychology class (The Behavior of Men and Women in the Workplace). I had been freaking out all week about it, not sure if I really knew the material well enough. Fiona and I were both nervous, in fact, and studied a lot together. We definitely could have done more, but at least we got something accomplished (the night before the exam!.. *ahem*). Anyway, it was great, because once I saw the essay questions and the "fill in the blank"s, I knew I'd be okay. Afterwards, Fiona said, "Well that was easy!" and when Joe asked me how I did, I couldn't help answering (in an imitation of that guy on the funny Washington Mutual commercials...), "Nailed it!" I'll find out for sure next week, I think. I'm definitely not worried.

I have a midterm in my Cultural History of Rap Music class on Monday. I'm a little freaked out, but I'll be okay once I get some studying done. (Which, I KNOW, I should probably be doing now -- you be quiet! I'll get to it soon enough!) It's 90 questions, multiple choice. Oy. Wish me luck!

In other news... Last week, I saw an optometrist. I always get nervous before doctor's appointments, but was trying to remain calm. I felt a lot better after I met and talked to the doctor, and realized he's a cool guy. He gave me a full eye exam. "One? Or two? One? Or two?" It's so funny for me to not be able to see things sometimes. A few of the lines I couldn't read at all. My vision's not too bad, though. In fact, the glasses I've been wearing are the exact ones prescribed to me (same lenses and frames and everything) that I got in my freshman year of high school, eight years ago. And it turns out that my right eye hasn't changed at all since then, and my left eye has only gotten slightly worse. He said, "I want to see if you can tell a difference, though. Okay, look at the third line on the wall. What's better, this?" I looked with just my glasses. "Or this?" he asked, sliding a magnifier over my left lense. "Oh, that's definitely better!" I said.

I went into the outside office and the secretary lady helped me pick out frames. I'm glad I had her help, or else I could have spent hours trying on frames. She was really cool, kind of like my own personal shopper. She is definitely a very feminine lady, into accessories and other girly things I don't understand. So it was funny to hear her comments such as, "Oh those plastic frames are way too heavy for your face. Try this one. Oh, not enough color. Okay, this? Hmm, this one softly complements your complexion and looks great with your hair!" She was very cool. One pair that I tried on, I liked right away. She had to go grab something, so I admired myself in the mirror for a little bit. When she came back, I said I thought those were my favorite, and she said they were hers (for me), too. So that was it! She'll call me next week, when they're ready.

She told me since my prescription is so low, I don't have to wear them all the time unless I want to. I thought that was great news. At first I considered trying not to wear them this weekend for a little bit. But then I thought better of that -- I have a lot of reading to do for Rap History and don't want to strain my eyes before the midterm. That three day eyeball headache I got early this quarter was the worst! I kept my glasses on today, then, except when Mallory took pictures of me with the animals. I didn't want there to be glare on my glasses from the sunlight, so I just took them off. And, oh. my. god. My eyes didn't seem to want to work! They just felt weird and things looked strange, like my eyeballs were tiny cameras trying to focus unsuccessfully. I felt dizzy as I walked around. Once I held still and handled the animals, it wasn't as bad. My eyes are confused, though. After I get my new glasses and have a few days where I don't have to think about midterms (ha, right, another one in just a couple weeks!), I will see if my eyes are okay without glasses for short periods of time. It's just freaky, because every time I try it, only a few minutes go by before my eyes are achey and I get scared of stressing them out. Those tiny eyeball muscles sure are sensitive! Anyway, if I do end up needing to wear glasses full time, at least I'll be sporting a really cute pair, as of next week.

Speaking of muscles (were we?), I plan to work on mine. I got all inspired by this weight training site, Stumptuous.com, that Beth linked to. The before and after pictures of the site owner herself (click "starting" and "who is krista?") as well as some of her readers (check out all three pages to see the amazing pics!), are truly amazing. I want to get all lean and buff, too! She also recommends low(er)-carb eating, which is cool. It's something I've been toying with in the back of my mind for a while, because I know people who've slimmed down really successfully with low-carb eating. And I've noticed myself getting hungry again shortly after eating a mostly-carb meal. So hell, I think I'm going to go for it and really focus on strength training (and continue with cardio work, too), and better eating. It's cool to feel like I have a health project to work on again. I kind of lost my drive when I quit the marathon training, because I didn't have a focus. But now that I do again, I feel excited and ready to get strong! Woo! Anyone else want to join me in strength training?

(Thanks, Krista, for making the site, and thank you, Beth, for linking it!!)
