Comedy and Magic

(( Friday, December 17, 2004 // 12: 37 AM ))

I am exhausted from laughing, which is a very nice feeling! Tonight Joe and I went to The Comedy and Magic Club with people from his job. I had an awesome time.

Going out tonight was the perfect excuse to go shopping this morning. I got a few things (a pink girly sweater, a light green v-neck sweater, and a brown courderoy skirt), and actually wore makeup and dressed up and everything. I wore my awesome boots (my ass-kicking boots!), which I originally bought to take to London, so I had a lot of London memories floating through my head today. And those are all very nice, of course. Hampton Court (the hedge maze!), walking through rainy streets, those funny British guys on New Year's Eve, all the wonderful plays we saw... I've got to go back to that city someday. Those boots along with my new green sweater and a black skirt made for a nice ensemble that left me feeling cute and girly. This is remarkable only in that it's an unusual feeling for typically-tomboyish me.

Anyway, everyone I talked to was very friendly and nice. We talked about Survivor, bamboo plants, and finals over appetizers. Shortly afterwards, the lights dimmed and the comedy began.

The first three guys were really cool. A car alarm went off during one guy's set and he said, "Is that the police?", dropped the mic, and ran off stage. Then he came back and said, "Seriously, is that someone's phone? Turn it off!" He was pretty funny.

The magician guy was really funny, too. He kept trying to get audience participation, but no one wanted to be his assistant. It was pretty weird, I thought. They would talk to him, but not stand up to go on stage. Finally, he got someone and she stood smiling but with her arms firmly crossed. Her body language screamed, "I'm uncomfortable!" but she made it through the set okay.

Ian Bagg was the feature comedian of the night, and my god, if you ever get the chance to see him, definitely go for it! He has a few jokes he tells, but he's mostly just a funny guy. He talks to the audience a lot and harasses them or goofs on stuff they say. It's my favorite kind of comedy, because you can see the spontaneity and humor in the comedian's personality, not just in a set they wrote. It's just a lot of fun. At one point, a woman must have stuck out her tongue and blown, in the way kids do sometimes. That ppbbbt! noise. Well, Ian Bagg said, "Did someone just make a fart noise at that last joke? Who was that? Why'd you make that fart noise?" It was already funny at that point, but it just kept getting more outrageous the more he talked to that woman. He called her, "cranky-puss" at one point and while he was harping on her, he said, "Yeah if you hated me already, you're going to hate me a lot more by the end of the night!" He called her table the Table of Evil, and joked that the cheery woman she was with brought the crankiest friend she had to balance out the table. To defend herself, the cranky lady said, "If you're in a good mood all the time and you're always happy, people hate you too." Everyone busted up, and Ian Bagg said, "What a weird thing to say!" Then he made fun of her a bit and joked about having a new kind of show now. It had definitely taken a Dr. Phil kind of tone for a brief moment there!

Describing it doesn't do it justice. Suffice it to say, my face hurt from smiling and laughing so hard through the whole show. As if that wasn't awesome enough, my chicken dinner and cheesecake dessert were freaking delicious. It was definitely an awesome way to spend the evening and I hope to go back again soon!

Dude! Why is everyone so shy?? haha I would have dislocated my shoulder shooting my arm up to volunteer! I love shit like that, its like being invited into the sandbox to play!!! haha I am so glad you had a great time!

I know, the shyness factor was very weird! I think people are afraid of looking stupid in front of a crowd. Anyway, thanks, I'm glad I had fun too!
