Little Zoo: Catching Up

(( Thursday, February 17, 2005 // 04: 05 PM ))

I've been to Little Zoo a couple times since I last wrote about it. Updates from last time:

Temoc the reindeer went back to her home up north. That totally makes it sound like she went back to live with Santa! Really, she just lives in Central California.

I got quite the colorful bruise where Roo kicked me! It took about a week to heal. I think I told all my friends at school that I got kicked by a wallaby, because it was the most interesting and unusual thing that had happened to me in a while!

The kingsnake is over his case of mouth rot and is now eating nicely again. We think he'd been too cold, so now he's got plenty of heat in his home.

Now for the new stuff:

There's a new employee at Little Zoo! Her name is Claire, and she's awesome. Very fun to work with and talk to.

When I was there in January, Claire asked me, "Do you want to see the capybara?" and my response was, "YES! What is it?" Heh. (If you don't know either, here's a picture.) Ours is a little baby, and I got to hold him. The second time I ever held him, I fed him lettuce. It was cute to hear him munching on it. Of course, the instant he was finished, he demanded to be let go, so I placed him on the ground and pet him a bit. I love the way his fur feels. He is a cool animal!

Baby Tycoon is getting big! He's not so much of a baby anymore. It's kind of sad. Oh well. Babies gotta grow up eventually, right?

We have a dog at Little Zoo now! Her name is Phoebe, and she's a beautiful Rottie. She's a sweetheart, but don't tell any potential burglars that. If they try to climb the fence and see her barking, I think they'll change their minds! She likes sitting in the sun and bellyrubs. If these things can be combined, she is in heaven. I love this dog!

We found out the armadillos LOVE avacado! They were in a kind of frenzy, eating it super fast, because they found it so delicious. We couldn't help laughing at their enthusiasm! (pictures are here)

This past weekend, things were arranged inconveniently in the main walkway. I found a way to switch stuff around and make a few things fit better and Mallory and Claire totally loved it. I was so happy that it worked and made things easier for everyone. Those "I rock!" moments don't happen all the time, so when they do, hang onto 'em, I say!

I also got to pet the lynx the other day. He likes being scratched on the side of his face, like a housecat does. Except that he's 10 times the size of a housecat! The purr in such a big cat is powerful and fascinating. He rubbed the top of his head into my chest, then suddenly decided he was grumpy and gave me a little mock-nip. Time to leave! I've seen housecats do that, too, just kind of almost nip you, as a warning that they're tired of you. But again - much bigger! So we left, with my adrenaline flowing just a bit. It was a pretty cool experience petting him, though.

More stories, coming soon!

Meg, the thought of petting a lynx makes me mental with excitement! My envy knows no bounds.

Hi Marn! Yeah, it was incredibly exhilerating!! I hope you get to pet a lynx someday.
