Lullaby

(( Saturday, November 19, 2005 // 08: 20 PM ))

Every morning lately, Ruby seems to enjoy sitting in her little baby chair for a little while. Then, she wonders why on earth she's not in someone's arms and begins to cry. One of these mornings, I scooped her up and walked her back and forth, back and forth, across the livingroom. She calmed down pretty quickly, and leaned her head back to look at me. I put my hand behind her, supporting her head in the palm of my hand, allowing her to lean back a little as we watched each other's faces and expressions. I began singing to Ruby as we walked, and it was really funny to watch her watch me, furrowing her brow every so often, or just looking amazed ("Sound is coming out of her mouth!"). And I continued to sing as her little eyelids grew heavy, and sweet little Ruby fell asleep watching me sing her a lullaby. I gently tilted her forward until her head was resting on my shoulder, and continued singing and walking for a while, trying to wait until she was in a deep sleep before putting her in her crib. That moment didn't come, though. She kept waking up on her own, so I put her in the baby bjorn and walked around with her, which she must have liked, because she took a pretty long nap as we walked together. I love watching her sleep. But watching her fall asleep while I sang to her? That was just magical.
